THE WHEEL OF TIME MUD COMMUNITY
The Wheel of Time MUD is played by a LOT of people. In short, players here feel part of an extended online family, with contacts and friends all over the globe. In practise, this means that the Wheel of Time MUD is a great place to hang out. It means you'll always find people with similar interests to yourself, be it socialising, pk or roleplaying; comparing Wheel of Time theories or whatever. This is because we're different to most: we're not a niche MUD catering for the one type of gamer only.
All sorts play here
The Wheel of Time MUD is filled with a community of Wheel of Time fans and MUD players. We're of the same generation as Wotmania and Dragonmount, and most of the Wheel of Time fans on the net have had a character at one point or another, including the creator of Dragonmount, and so on. The game has more than 1.8 million lines of code, and the in-game geography is unsurpassed. As a player you can walk about in every major area of the books, and even meet many of the major characters, all coded with ever changing AI to interact with you. We're part of the folklore of the web if you're a Wheel of Time fan.
On any given evening you're likely to be playing the game with more than 100 other people around the globe, and during every reboot upwards of 3000 characters will have been connected. That's about 1 million character play-sessions per year, upwards of 10 million during our 14 year history. The website gets more than 50 million hits per year, and the Wheel of Time MUD is now referenced in just about all major gaming directories and recognised as one of the biggest and best MUDs on the internet. We credit one main factor: the huge community of people online who are part of the Wheel of Time MUD in one way or another.
Not just a MUD, a family
Above all, what keeps the Wheel of Time MUD so special is the vast community of players. What makes this great from a player's point of view is the knowledge that there are always friends online, there are always people to interact with, and the MUD never actually feels 'dead'. We have players from almost every country in the world with different cultural backgrounds, knowledge, and life experiences. We have players from every timezone, so even when the US is asleep there are enough people around and enough going on to keep the game fresh, unpredictable, and exciting.
...what keeps the Wheel of Time MUD so special is the vast community of players
And, a large community also means other things. Over the years, many folk have put up fantastic websites about the mud, and the repository of information out there on the web about the Wheel of Time MUD caters to almost everybody's needs, from what's the best strategy to use to defeat Gorthel to how do the quests set by the Maradon Town crier.
Perhaps the biggest benefit from being the largest Wheel of Time MUD is that it means there's so much more for everyone. In other words, it means if you're a roleplayer you'll find more people to roleplay with, if you're a pkiller it means a larger pool of rivals, and if you're here for the social interaction it means you're never stuck with the same people all the time. It means the sides are realistic, and clans have enough momentum and numbers to be a real force in the land.
It is largely though our players telling their friends and the web about this game that we've been able to stay at a large size whilst most other MUDs of a similar size and scope have shrunk under the pressure of competing MMOs and MMORPGs. We hugely appreciate the fact that our players go out their way to spread the word about the MUD: we all like a busy buzzing community and ultimately, as this is in the hands of the players, this is something the players enjoy promoting and helping with. We are grateful to each person who has thanked us by telling their friends and helping to spread the word about the game, without them the game would be nowhere.
An inclusive athmosphere
Unlike many more recent Wheel of Time MUDS, we're not a niche roleplay MUD in the sense that "we only want people who roleplay". Our roleplay isn't mandatory, it's voluntary and "opt-in" through the clanning mechanisms. What this allows is a very strong focus on those engaging in roleplay here primarily for that activity (clanned people) by a dedicated team of game dungeon masters ('immortals') called Watchers. Watchers are entirely dedicated to clans and roleplay. It's their job to make sure that clans are not only a lot of fun to join but also to encourage that characters in that clan to act and do things that you'd expect them (for example by clan bonuses or a reward of quest points or equipment).
...we deliberately chose a realistic setting in which characters can be player-killed
We've always made it a point to try to remain as true to the books as possible without it destroying the balance of the game. Unlike most other Wheel of Time muds which tend to be part of the mudding community without paying too much attention to the Wheel of Time on the web, we're also active in that community, and we've made it a point to develop some tools and resources to help casual Wheel of Time web users out there. We love to give back to the Wheel of Time community: over the years we've put together unique tools such as the Wheel of Time Directory, the Wheel of Time Codex, The Name Generator, the Taunt Generator... and the finest Wheel of Time map on the web.
And now you’re here, what do you do?!
Whether you’re clanned or not, roleplay and playerkilling provide infinite opportunities for the dedicated and casual player alike. For anyone feeling like a bit of playerkilling head on north to the Blight to do battle with the Shadow or head down to the South-West and defend your lands from the invading Seanchan! Don’t wander too far though, because the Seanchan and the Shadow could come to you! You might find yourself defending your homelands from the very gates of your own city or doing battle amongst the shops inside the walls of Caemlyn itself!
Don’t fancy playerkilling? Never fear, a good old raid of invading mobs of all types and varieties could well be heading your way courtesy of our dedicated immortal team! Gear up for some fast, fun action as some of the roughest and toughest mobs on the MUD are loaded up with some nice equipment just begging you to try taking it from them. And if a mob-raid isn’t enough, you go to the mobs! Head over to the Waste for a dance with the Aiel Maiden ’s or to the very epitome of evil inside the human lands in the form of the tainted city of Shadar Logoth.
If you’re more interested in the less dangerous lifestyle and want to leave exploring to the fool-hardy, set up your own business as a merchant of trade or a healer of the sick and wounded. The opportunities for your character’s roleplay are limited only by your own imagination.
The Community In-Game
In-game, interaction with players is not only desirable, but encouraged through the structure of SMobbing. Player-killing, Gain Levels and Roleplaying. Communication between players is available through a plethora of mediums:
- Say: Anyone the same room as you will hear you.
- Emote: Anyone in the room will see your action.
- Whisper: Only the person you whisper to will hear you, if they are in your room.
- Tell: Only the person you ‘tell’ will hear you, but they can be in a different room to yourself. Additionally, only those of your race can be sent tells.
- Yell: Anyone in the Zone (Approx 90 rooms) will hear you. Restricted to those characters Level 2+.
- Chat/Narrate: Anyone on the same race as you will hear you. Narrates are for in-character (IC) discussion, and chats are for out-of-character (OOC) discussion. Restricted to those characters Level 2+.
- Shout: Anyone on any race can hear you. Note: Shouting causes Hp loss. Restricted to those characters Level 5+.
- Pray: For discussion with Immortals.
If you've ever used an instant message client or IRC, the feel of using these ingame channels is very much like those.
The Wheel of Time MUD Forums
We have wotmud forums for players to discuss a variety of issues and topics that range from roleplay and player-killing, to general MUD discussion and even topics that have no association with the MUD itself or the Wheel of Time. Almost anything goes really, although they are moderated to keep them clean and civil. Finally, the forums have a personalised individual mail and also group-mail function. This allows individuals to send private mails to another individual or even to an entire clan as a whole.
The forums are a feature that allows the Wheel of Time community to bond and interact outside the game itself. This provides the opportunity to get to know one another, especially those players who would otherwise not play in-game at the same time as yourself or those or play another race to yourself, or simply those who choose to spend their time in a different city to yourself.
Clans and Community
Joining a clan is a fun way to become a part of a community within a community! Clanmates, by nature, will help each other and clanning is a great way to form bonds with people you may never have otherwise interacted with. The clanning procedure of many clans is often based upon how many clan-members you meet and interact with. In addition, each clan also has it’ s own clan forum that is private to all but the members of that clan.
Player-Run Sites
What's nice about the Wheel of Time MUD is that lots of people just go out their way to help each other. For example, you won't find Zmud scripts sold here for credits, but what you will find is people making things and giving them away to others just to help them enjoy the game. So be sure to visit the following sites for more information on roleplay, clanning or even just socializing with the other players of the Wheel of Time MUD.
