We all see how at the end of the book, Lan charges in at Tarwins Gap with a force of 12000 men, against a force of possibly hundreds of thousands of shadowspawn.

But, how is he gonna be saved?

My only real theory is that by the point it shows him charging, he's already been set up to be. As we see with Perrin's chapters, the chapter timelines are very off in this book, his going back into midway into the last book as we see Tam needing to set off for Tear to meet with Rand.

What if at the point it shows Lan charging on, Rand's meeting with Egwene and all the monarchs has already been finished, and the march to the North has already begun. Or we are about to see the re-emergence of someone like Logain who has been mysteriously missing for the whole book, to show up with some serious firepower on Rand's orders to hold the Gap.

Or, if all else fails, we see the rise of the Ogier army like Mangler wanted, which I'd be totally okay with all things considered. Or Rand massive gates the Borderland armies back north to start some ass kickery the likes of which hasn't been done by any non-Rand character since Dumai's Wells.

What are your theories? I'm sure you people that have read the series like 10 times will have some in depth ones.

You could be right about that. However, if it's just the timeline is off, well, then it's a failure by the author.

was kinda hoping he would die

imo kinda dumb of him to charge against a hundred thousand trollocs with a couple hundred men, oh and all for 'duty', duty that he'd laid aside for how many years now?

even ituralde faced less with more and had the advantage of terrain to use to ambush the ds, lan ordering the charge was kinda pitiful, sorry

but yea, otherwise my guess is it's probably a timeline thing, and rand will be gating in his armies to distract the do while he does his strike at SG with the WT + non df BT.

how many ogier are there?

Lan has 12000 soldiers with him, and we don't know any numbers at all for ogier. Be it overall or any that COULD be there

I chalked it up to the screwy Timeline. I'm sure some force will be gated to him before he dies, much like how Perrin was near his last leg when the Ashaman started showing up at Dumai's wells. Jordan never killed off any of his "good-guy" main characters.

...yet!

But I agree with you, someone will show up at the last minute. Once Lan has unintentionally led thousands to their death, Logain and/or other channies will show up and save the day.

I hate to bring her up, but Nynaeve has got to know something is happening through her bond with him. If she is still in Tar Valon where there are tons of women who can open gates, tons of forces to join the fight, she might persuade Egwene to send support. I'd say she would go herself, but this is the Last Battle and she's bound to assisting Rand Sedai (I get such a kick out of that) with the seals and the Dark One. That, or her work with Rand, if they succeed, will cause massive and unexplained victories everywhere as the DO's touch is removed from the land. All in the nick of time, when all seems lost of course.

kinda want the DO to win just cause I want to see all the darkfriends die and realize how dumb they were

minus moridin I guess since he seems to know what's really going on though I guess he is mad from...philosophizing, unless the other chosen do too?

really, why would you swear to work for a guy who's going to destroy everything and kill everyone, and continue working for I might add, if you didn't know when you first swore :P

belal/demandred - ooooh i'm so jealous of lews therin, time to work for the bad guy even though he's just gonna kill me in the end

then again, I guess I never understand the reasoning some authors use for the whole betrayal thing. if anyone reads warhammer 40k, the -entire- horus heresy series makes me want to vomit.

I think Moridin is more likely stuck in his role. He is too far in to get out, even though he doesn't necessarily like it.

He seems rather weary of it all, as we saw in book before this. He knows he is just going to be used then thrown away, and that the DO is most likely not going to deliver on any of his grandiose promises.

mat blows the horn again.

I think that's one of 2 things he's referring to when he sends Egwene the message that white tower has something that's his.

the other is the shadar logoth dagger... someone has to take down fain.

well, Mat getting the Horn back is a given. But Fain has the dagger on him atm and is coursing through the Blight just headed north.

Ahaha, what if Fain saved Lan by taking over all those trollocs and fades like he did in his one mention this book :P

ok so that really narrows it down to mat blowing the horn at the last battle.

How does fain eat it in the end?

btw if it was GRRM mat would sneak in tower storage room with all the artifacts, see the horn, then go over to it, then see the dagger pick up the dagger and blow the horn for the DO.

that is to say, Rand is going to balefire him.

Fain has that 100k crown mark on his head, as per Rand. It'll either be Rand doing it or Fain is going to play a much much larger roll in the big finish than we've been led to believe.

What if he takes down the DO and then becomes the big bad guy to end it with?!

Egwene takes the horn from storage, tries to blow it, curses a lot because it doesn't work. Since she is the chosen one to save the world, she channels a dung at it to make it work, and it is destroyed. DO wins.

Or she goes to get it, finds out it's been stolen, and we lose that plot point
