A more capable character in a mud is achieved through gaining 'levels', attained by killing creatures, thus gaining 'experience.' With levels, you gain hitpoints and practice sessions, which allow you to improve your fighting and various abilities. Killing a pheasant, for example, gets you about 100 experience points; kill ten or so of those as a level 1 and you'll get the message "You gain a level!" and thus become level 2, and so on. Remember that your skills and stats are reset at level 5, so it does not really matter what you practise before that (ie practise whatever is going to help you to level fastest). After level 5, resets will only happen after you've died a few times, so please choose those skills wisely!!
