Thieves at WoTmud IV, the wheel of time mud, daggermasters

(See also "The lost art of assassination", written by players in the game.)

Attack

Due to the inherent dexterity required of a thief, they often use this ability to augment their below average fighting skills by attacking more than once per round through the use of this skill. Attack allows a thief a chance to attack twice per round rather than the general one time per round, due to the fact that they kill things quickly and quietly.

Backstab

Syntax: backstab <target>

Backstab is basically an assassination attempt. Based upon your skill in backstabbing, sneaking and hiding, your aggression and how alert the opponent is, the attacker attempts to silently move behind its opponent and critically hit it. A successful backstab will result in the damage done to your opponent being multiplied by some value based upon skill, level and weapon. A piercing weapon must be wielded in order to backstab something

Dodge

Dodge is the art of avoiding an attack entirely, thereby thwarting an oppenent's ability to harm you. This skill is very important to thieves, who, by their line of work, are not really able to wear the heavy, protective armor of the fighting classes. To effectively dodge requires training, and the benefit of a light load, which no doubt is the reason why thieves are often short of equipment, while having large sums of money.

Palm

Syntax: palm <item>

Like the great masters, the palm skill allows one to pick up and drop items undetected, and therefore unnoticed by bystanders, quickly slipping it out of sight upon your person.

Example:

> palm mark

Pick

Syntax: pick <door> <direction>

This is used to attempt to pick the lock of a locked door, provided it does not require a special key. Your chance of success (or even ability to succeed) depends on how well you know the skill.

Example:

> pick door east

Sneak

Syntax: sneak

Rogue Skill:

This causes you to attempt to move silently, masking your movements from those around you. This skill can be very useful in attempting to steal from people and is a requirement for attempting to backstab someone. Success depends upon how well you have trained in this skill. Note that for classes other than thieves, sneaking takes extra movement points and will tire you quickly if left on. Sneak again to toggle it off.

Steal

Syntax: steal <item> <person>

Rogue skill:

Steal attempts to obtain an item or money from someone without their knowing it. Your chances of success are greatly improved if you are sneaking, hiding, and vastly improved if your target is asleep. Your chances of successfully stealing an item depends upon your skill and its related skills. Be aware that heavier or bulkier items are much harder to acquire, and that unsuccessful stealing ir rarely met with a freindly response.

Example:

> steal crown Armorer
