READ SOME ESSENTIALS,
FIVE ESSENTIAL ITEMS YOU MUST HAVE
The world of the Wheel of Time MUD can be a hard place to survive for the unprepared. Fortunately, every challenge the game has to offer becomes less difficult if you just have the five essential items for survival. From your basic needs to traveling in style, this guide covers the top five items that everyone needs to have for success in the MUD.
First priority: food!
Your character's survival depends on eating. This does not mean that your character will die if he or she goes without eating for too long, but having a full stomach directly affect the rate at which your health and movement points regenerate, or regens for short. Without being fully nourished, your character's health only goes up by a few points every minute or so, even while resting or sleeping. This means that being hungry can get you killed in a tough fight. Food can sometimes be found in the central squares of cities where people leave it for those in need. If you must have food immediately, there are many shops that sell it for a small price.
Second priority: water!
Just like being hungry, being thirsty greatly impact your ability to regain health and moves. Some zones even have a heat effect that makes your character extra thirsty, so it is vital to have enough water to survival in the most extreme conditions. Fortunately, water is easy to find and has an unlimited supply. If you find a room with a water dispensing item in it, such as a fountain, well, stream, or any other source of water, you can drink or refill your portable water containers from it. Be careful though! There are some places in the world where the water is poisoned, so it might be a good idea to sip it first.
Third priority: light!
Time in the MUD fluctuates between day and night, much like the real world. Humans and Seanchan cannot see in the dark and get a message saying, "It's pitch black..." when in a dark room. Being in the dark means that you cannot see people in your room, items on the ground or in your pouch, sack, or pack, and people that are speaking or using global channels. This means that, unless you know a lot about where you are, you cannot go anywhere without some risk. Even worse, darkside players and hostile monsters can see in the dark and will attack you. It is especially hard to fight someone in the dark, and even harder to run away. You can carry lanterns and torches with you to light the room that you are in. Either type of these lights can be bought from grocery stores for a few coppers.
Fourth priority: a dagger!
Thanks to an addition to the starting kit granted by the guardian, you begin the game with a dagger in along with your beginner's weapon. By practicing the hunter skil survival, you can use the dagger to butcher the corpses of animals that you kill. Higher levels of survival allow you to obtain more pieces of meat and butcher smaller creatures, but even with just level one survival every cute brown deer is a potential meal.
Fifth priority: a horse!
One skill that you can practice is the hunter skill ride. Different levels in the ride skill mean different abilities for your character, but almost everyone agrees that ride level 3 is one of the most important investments for human and Seanchan alike. At level three ride, your character gains the ability to fight from horseback. Horses are used so that whenever you move from room to room, your moves are unaffected and the movement cost is taken from the horse's moves instead. This means that your character can travel great distances without getting tired. Without a horse, you can easily become haggard, or too tired to move. If you become haggard in a room with a hostile monster, you can't run away and have to fight. Also, if you run into a darkside character, if you won't be able to run to safety without a horse, since darkside characters have more movement points than humans.
So, you think you're ready?
You've double checked your food, filled your skins, collected your lights, grabbed a dagger, and mounted up? Great, you're almost ready to explore the world, level up, and fight to protect your country. Best of luck to you, but there's one more thing that's essential to have: A sense of adventure. Without that, you'll never survive the bloodthirsty hordes of the Blight, the armies of the Empress, the brutal torture of the Waste, or that annoying hyena just east of Whitebridge.
