WHEEL OF TIME MUD CRAFTING

Here in the Wheel of Time MUD there are a wide variety of skills that can be learned by players. You can become a master weaponsmith and forge your own weapons, or practice trades to produce a wide range of products that you can sell to wealthy merchants roaming the world. You can choose from all kinds of activities. Training your own horses and sheepdogs, manufacture of fine wines and fish oils, creating furs and cloth, molding cheese and candles, cooking up soaps and rare dyes, even mining and smelting your own iron bars!

How to start? Easy. First though let's differentiate as although some crafts are available to all, others you can only join and become proficient in one. 'Jack of all trades, master of none' as the saying goes. This holds true for both weapon crafting and the related skills, namely the smelting of iron bars (although anyone can learn to mine the ore), the turning of wooden poles and the curing of leather. Lets have a quick look at weapon crafting and associated skills.

Weapon guilds, crafting guilds and mining

First you need to choose the weapon you wish to focus on crafting. Each city specialises in different arms. Remember though, you can only be a member of one weapon crafting guild on each character. You can leave the guild at any time if you believe you've made a poor choice but as it costs 150 gold crowns to apprentice in the first place, a little time spent thinking about your choice is wise.

Joining guilds

Find the grand master of the guild you wish to join. Tell him "I wish to join your weapon guild". Then, once he replies to your question, give 150 crown guild to join his guild. Having become a member you now need to find out the specific ingredients to make that particular weapon. Find the weaponsmith there and ask him "which items are needed to craft a weapon of the xxx guild?". You can only make one weapon per day though as the forge is busy. Get what's required and you're a step closer to making your weapon!

Mining, smelting, pole and leather making

Mining is a skill available to all. The retired miner in Baerlon will be more than happy to teach his craft and you can get his assistance by saying "I want to learn how to mine". Most of the other items needed to make a weapon are also craftable, but like the weapon guilds you can only become a member of one crafting guild, so careful consideration is a must. Smelting, leather making and pole making are all skills you can learn but again at a price. Unlike the weapon guilds you have to say to the guild master "I wish to join your crafting guild". This time he will want 160 gold crowns for membership. Another difference from weapon making is you can make several of these and barter them for money or other items you may need.

Having chosen your second occupation you are now able to make your own weapons! You don't of course have to join both a weapon crafting AND crafting guild as there will sometimes be people with a surplus of items they may be willing to sell or trade for.

Crafting of saleable goods (side-trades and related items)

As well as making your own weapons, iron, poles and leather the Wheel of Time MUD also has a range of items you can learn to craft. The expert in these vocations is namely the worker. They roam cities diligently employed in various tasks for their masters but may take a minute to explain to you about the various side trades if you ask them nicely for "help with trade" and the whereabouts of the crafts if you mention "trades". The items you learn to produce are sought after by rich merchants who will gladly pay, and pay well for your efforts. The further you are from the area they were made in, the higher the value of the produce.

As you can see, the Wheel of Time MUD supplies players with many different means of making money (important for buying new items from the numerous shops in the world) as well as allowing you to produce weapons for your own use and items to trade. As well as being fun and fulfilling to the individual, it's also an important addition as each player strives to get better equipment, thus bettering themselves.
