THE 1 PAGE PLAYGUIDE
The core principle of muds is that you play a character with a certain number of hitpoints and movement points. You can see these by using the score command; should you reach zero hitpoints you will die and be reborn. If you reach zero movement points you will be unable to move. Hitpoints and movement points both regenerate whilst you play.
Characters have levels; you start at level 1 and gain levels by slaying creatures. The mechanism for this is experience; slaying the creature gains you experience and the more experience you gain, the higher the level you become. The higher the level you become, the more hitpoints you have. When you gain a level you are also granted practices; practices allow characters to improve their skills and must be spent at practice masters, which can be found in cities.
Slaying creatures
To slay a creature, use the command kill creaturename. For example, kill deer will engage you on a deer. Your prompt will then show you the condition of both fighting parties as the fight proceeds. If you seem to be winning, keep going, but if you are losing and about to die (ie awful or critical) then enter flee. If the flee attempt is successful, you will be disengaged and in one of the rooms next door to the one you fled from. If unsuccessful, enter the command again until successful.
In terms of players, whilst most people will just appear to you as a name, ie elethera, if you come across a player with stars round their name then that is the game telling you they are an enemy. Ie *nass*. Flee and run away as fast as you can; opposing race players players can and will kill you.
Your first session
To play, choose an appropriate fantasy name and follow the instructions on-screen. If you are asked for a password it means that the name is already in use and you should quit out and choose a different name. If this is your first character you might like to try a male human Two Rivers warrior. You should now be in the Circle of Light. Go down, enter weave caemlyn, walk one north then six east (call gate open if it blocks you) then go one north. There you will find small, weak creatures that you should be able to slay for your first levels and experience.
Now that you are on the game-grid, all commands are executed by pressing the buttons on your beginner's client. If you decide to enter them manually, commands usually follow the verb that you would use to describe the action. For example, to look around in a room, simply type look and enter it. There is a list of commands relevant to beginners here.
Further help
People with [master] after their name are a good source of help
In the game, people with [master] after their name, or with Lord/Lady in front, are experienced players of the game who are a good source of tips and help. Most of them will help you if you ask nicely, use tell name will you help me level please to contact them. For further reading, have a look at the helpfiles on the website, or the forums. Every character is automatically given a forum account 24 hrs after reaching level 5 and you can log in with the same username/password combination as your in-game character.
To finish your playing session you should go to an inn using the commands mentioned here and rent. Next time that you log on, you will be in this inn again and with all your items. If you are not in an inn and type quit you will log off where you are without saving any of your items.
